11th Public Theater festival includes women's and gay plays

Cleveland Public Theatre's 11th Festival of New Plays in January is set to serve up powerful new works that are of interest to lesbian and gay theater-goers. Seven works have been written by women, and three of the entries have been written by gay playwrights.

Sins of the Mothers by Pamela Simones of Akron is being read on Jan. 8 at 8 p.m., and Jan. 10 at 3 p.m. It's the story of a lesbian daughter who brings her lover home for Thanksgiving, and the three generations of women who all start shaking skeletons out of the family closet.

Guillermo Reyes, a gay Chilean who currently lives in Los Angeles, has written September 11, which will be presented on Jan. 9 and 10 at 8 p.m. It is a wry political comedy of 1975 Chile where, on the anniversary of the dictator Pinochet's coup, a cop's outrageous daughter thwarts her family.

The Modern Heart (and Housing) by Kelly Easton of San Diego debuts on Jan 15 at 8 p.m. and Jan. 17 at 3 p.m. In this black comedy with teeth, a female social worker and a homeless family are thrown into the Kafkaesque maw of conservative government bureaucraсу.

Intercourse, Ohio by Boston playwright Geralyn Horton is a 1960's tangle of sex and sexual politics as a feisty young woman comes of age at a small conservative Ohio college. This work is paired with In the Gist of Twilight by Clevelander Gail Franklin Young. It is a satirical look at a striving African-American woman who has given up looking for a man on her level, and conjures herself a new black Adam to be her sex-slave. Both plays can be seen Jan. 16 and 17 at 8 p.m.

Minya Mintz is by Anna Baum of Boston. This haunting surrealist explora-

tion of a woman's inner life features a magic fish, a dream child, and a witch who appear to a sensitive young woman who is resisting her boyfriend's proposal of marriage. Toni Walker of Cleveland's play, Heaven in Your Arms, is about a young black couple who struggle to preserve a marriage crumbling under alcohol, drugs, and family pressures. Both of these works are being presented on Jan. 22 at 8 p.m. and Jan. 24 at 3 p.m.

The final nights of the festival feature The Nanjing Banana Race by New York gay playwright Reggie Cheong-Leen, and The Uninvited by Cleveland's Joanne Durante. Nanjing is a resonant, funny, heartbreaking clash of cultures: to get out of China, two middle-aged “hotel boys" compete for the attention of a gay Japanese-American businessman. Durante's play is a contemporary re-telling of Poe's The Masque of the Red Death where threatening figures from the world of art crash a costume party at a conservative island retreat. These moving plays can be seen Jan. 23 and 24 at 8 p.m.

The Festival of New Plays presents staged readings: the actors carry scripts and the scenery is a bit sparse but otherwise it's real theater. This is a fascinating introduction to new works by playwrights across the country who are both breaking in and those who have several successes to their credit. A total of 12 plays are being presented over three weekends. Admission is $6 regular, $4 for students and seniors, or a Festival Pass is available to see all the plays for $25 ($15 for students).

Cleveland Public Theatre is at 6415 Detroit Ave., near West 65th St. Call 6312727 for more information or to make reservations.
